The “Domestication of the mud crab Scylla serrata” of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center-Aquaculture Department’s (SEAFDEC-AQD) is this year’s winner of the Elvira O. Tan Memorial Awards for Aquaculture and Marine Fisheries.
The award was conferred to the Center’s researchers, namely: Dr. Emilia T. Quinitio, Joana Joy dela Cruz, Maria Rowena Equia, Fe Dolores Paradao-Estepa, Gaudioso Pates, and Celia R. Lavilla-Pitogo on July 29 at the University of the Philippines Open University’s (UPOU) Centennial Center for Digital Learning Auditorium in Los Baños, Laguna. They received P25,000 and a plaque of recognition.
The Elvira O. Tan Award provides incentives to Filipino scientist and researchers who published their research results/outputs in any foreign or local refereed journals. The paper should be published within the last five years prior to the date of the award and have not been awarded previously. SEAFDEC’s winning paper was published in the Aquaculture International, Journal of the European Aquaculture Society.
The awarding ceremony was one of the highlights of the 2011 National Science and Technology Week celebration of the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. Presenting the award to SEFADEC’s researchers was Dr. William G. Padolina, Deputy Director General of the International Rice Research Institute. He was assisted by Dr. Grace Javier-Alfonso, Chancellor of University of the Philippines-Open University; and Director Cesario R. Pagdilao, Deputy Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development or PCAARRD.
