An inception meeting cum workshop was held recently at the Isabela State University (ISU) to review the specifics of the project “Advancement of Science for the Sustainable Utilization and Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources of Falcata and Yemane.”
Staff from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST), Central Mindanao University (CMU), and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) attended the activity.
Included in the review were the responsibilities of the parties involved in the project as well as the workplan, budget, and other administrative concerns.
Falcata or Paraserianthes falcataria and yemane, Gmelina arborea, are two wood tree species known to be light and fast-growing. Falcata wood can be processed to construction materials such as plywood and block board. Likewise, yemane is used for construction, particularly for furniture and joinery.
Attendees from PCAARRD were Dr. Leila America, Assistant Director; Dalisay Cabral, ISP Manager on Industrial Tree Plantations (ITP); and Magdalena Ramos, Science Research Analyst, all of the Forestry and Environment Research Division (FERD), PCAARRD.
Representing CMU were Dr. Maria Luisa Soliven, CMU President; and Dr. Jupiter Casas, CMU Dean of the College of Forestry and Environmental Sciences.
