PCARRD, through its TechnoMart Program, participated in the recently concluded 2011 International Food Exhibit (IFEX) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
Hosting five science and technology (S&T) products from its regional consortia, the Council themed its exhibit “The flavors of science”. The Council took its cue from IFEX’s theme for the year of “Celebrate the flavors”.
Specifically, the PCARRD exhibit showcased how technology can help transfer the taste, quality, and health benefits of food products from the ingenuity of the “Magsasaka-Siyentista” (MS).
The first among the PCARRD exhibitors was a “regular” ̶ ̶̶ MS Rebecca Tubongbanua from Guimaras who is the expert behind the “Packed Sunshine and Freshness” processed mango products. She turned the exotic mango fruit into ketchup, sauce, and concentrate. Entrepreneur Minda Yee from Sorsogon offered pili oil dubbed as “Pilifinos Choice,” a host of healthy oils perfect for cooking as well as for massage. From Bansalan, Davao, MS Ben Lao displayed “Sweet without the guilt” with his coco sugar and other coconut sap products. Another entrepreneur from Davao, Mary Grace Belviz, brought frozen durian and other products through the brilliance of vacuum packing and freezing technology. Lastly, “Fresh berries from clean runners”, the tagline of strawberries from La Trinidad, Benguet, presented the strawberry jams and preserves of Dr. Jane K. Avila of the Benguet State University.
The event housed 399 local and international exhibitors. Visitors of the exposition varied, from members of the media/press, individual buyers, traders, consolidators, exporters, and business groups.
Notable guests in the event were US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas Jr., Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory L. Domingo, and Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III.
