An international workshop on the use of a knowledgebase/database system on lakes that can be contributed to by countries in Asia was recently attended by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).
The workshop, “International Workshop on Development and Use of Multilingual Knowledgebase/Knowledge mining System (LAKES),” was attended by the Officer-in-Charge of the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD-PCAARRD) Engr. Eduardo V. Manalili. It was held at the International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC) Training Room, Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan on February 27 to March 1, 2019.
Adelina Santos Borja, Director of the Lake Resource Management Division of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA); Peter Jedel Mariano, Records Officer of LLDA; and six other researchers, managers and scientists from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Kenya also joined the workshop.
The activity discussed, prepared, and implemented the Southeast Asian Limnological Network (SEALNet) knowledgebase/database system based on the LAKES platform. It also covered the regional protocol for LAKES 3, a web-based version of the system as well as the institution-specific intranet protocol for LAKES 4.
LAKES was developed at the Research Center for Sustainability in collaboration with the International Lake Environment Committee for instantaneous ‘mining’ of a vast body of information and data on lakes. The system has multilingual capacity for the Latin Languages (e.g., French, Spanish, etc.) or the pseudo-Latin linguistic structure languages (e.g., Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, Filipino, etc.).
The system can be used to compile information on different lakes in the Philippines and will also be part of SEALNet. When populated, the internet-based database can also form part of the PCAARRD Knowledge Management Portal.
Dr. Masahisa Nakamura assisted by Ms. Kiyoko Takemoto served as the resource person. They provided participants with Downloading Tutorials for LAKES 3 and LAKES 4 Versions. They also taught participants how to populate the LAKES 3 Portable Edition (stand-alone system) and how to operate it.
The International Lake Environment Committee based in Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan will officially communicate to PCAARRD through Adelina Santos-Borja on the official membership of DOST-PCAARRD in the ILEC. It is hoped that PCAARRD can contribute to the SEALNet database by uploading research reports on lakes and rivers.
