In observance of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI) will hold a three-day celebration themed “Mas Masaya sa Syensaya”.
Activities will commence on July 18 with an opening ceremony at the Baker Hall of the University of the Philippine Los Baños (UPLB), College, Laguna.
Invited to keynote the event is Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo.
As with the previous years, the celebration will be highlighted by a science discovery exhibit, a techno forum, and a research and development (R&D) awarding ceremony.
The exhibit, dubbed as “Wonderama”, will run from July 18 to 20 also at the Baker Hall. It will showcase basic science principles, researches and experiments, and the application of science and technology (S&T) in agricultural production, energy, and environment. Also featured are the programs and projects of the LBSFI partner institutions.
The techno forum or “Talakayan” will be held on July 19 at the ICOPED Auditorium also in UPLB. The knowledge-sharing activity for farmers and fisherfolks will feature technologies on the agriculture, aquatic and natural resources sectors.
The LBSCFI R&D awarding ceremony, on the other hand, will be held at the SEARCA Auditorium in UPLB. The Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. (PARRFI), one of the members of LBSCFI, will confer its R&D award for the agriculture, forestry and natural resources sectors. Guest speaker for the occasion is National Economic Development Authority Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning and Director General Arsenio M. Balisacan.
LBSCFI is one of four science communities that DOST established in accordance with Presidential Executive Order no. 784 in 1984. LBSCFI fosters the spirit of sharing resources and expertise among its 23 member-agencies located in Los Baños.
The NSTW, on the other hand, was instituted by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 2214 in 1982. It was later amended through Republic Act 169 which set its annual celebration every third week of July.
