The Forest Products Research and Development Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-FPRDI), together with the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), recently launched a two-year project to train rubber farmers and LGU staff in major rubber-producing provinces in the Philippines.
As one of the top rubber-producing country in the world, the Philippines was ranked 7th in the world in terms of producing rubber, with a production of 547,861mt in 2015. However, despite this standing, the country’s rubber industry still suffers from low latex yield and poor quality cup lumps due to improper tapping techniques and use of battery solution in latex coagulation.
To address this challenge, FPRDI and PCAARRD launched the project, "Capability Building on Tapping and Use of Appropriate Coagulant for Improved Rubber Latex Yield." The project aims to train 500 farmer-tappers and 70 local trainer-tappers on the proper way of rubber latex tapping, as well as in appropriate coagulation and handling techniques. The project also aims to produce Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials showcasing the best practices of rubber latex harvesting, coagulating and handling.
The training activities will be conducted in seven rubber-producing provinces in the country namely: Zamboanga Sibugay, North Cotabato, Agusan del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Bukidnon, Basilan, and Laguna.
Spearheaded by Dr. Maria Cielito G. Siladan of the Technical Services Division of FPRDI (FPRDI-TSD), the training team is currently on the initial stage of identifying and meeting with prospective participants and training teams in preparation for the actual implementation of the project.
