DOST-PCAARRD to promote Science Scaling for Sustainable Development at the 2nd National Sustainability Summit

Cebu Technological University (CTU) will once again host the National Sustainability Summit in its second year this July 5-6, 2023 in San Francisco, Cebu. With the theme “Sustainability for the future,” the event will showcase breakthrough research and development efforts in agriculture, fisheries, and food systems. The 2-day event aims to provide a platform for government agencies, research and development institutions, SUCs, and other private organizations to promote sustainability initiatives in the country.

Dr. Melvin B. Carlos, Deputy Executive Director for Administration, Resource Management, and Support Services at the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) will showcase the council’s efforts in sustainable research and development (R&D) practices in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector.

Dr. Carlos will discuss the concept of “Scaling Science for Sustainable Development.”  While industry efforts on scaling up in terms of production, stakeholders engagement, and quality are already evident, on their own they are insufficient for sustaining ‘good change’ and positive societal impact as proven by the pandemic.

Instead of these conventional strategies, a science-based approach to scaling agriculture industries is deemed more effective in achieving the country’s sustainable development and growth. Scaling Science will focus on intensifying R&D results to optimize impacts for sustainability as a public good. Being science-based, it shall be systematic and principle-based to further increase the technologies and innovations that will benefit society at large.
