DOST-PCAARRD supports the 61st PSAS Scientific Meeting and Annual Convention

Animal scientists, veterinarians, and industry players recently attended the 61st Philippine Society of Animal Science (PSAS) Scientific Meeting and Annual Convention from October 22 to 25, 2024 at the Acacia Hotel Davao. 

The convention was co-sponsored by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). Themed “Progressive and Food-secure Future for the Philippine Animal Industry,” it emphasized innovative and sustainable research and enduring partnerships that hope to significantly contribute to the Philippines' food security and economic stability.

PSAS President Claro N. Mingala officially opened the convention. The inspirational message and keynote message were delivered by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Deogracias Victor B. Savellano and Assistant Secretary Constante J. Palabrica.

Participants presented various research initiatives in animal disease and diagnostics; breeding and genetics; nutrition; production and processing; biotechnology; development; and socioeconomics through plenary, practical, scientific, and poster sessions.

A practical session was sponsored by DOST-PCAARRD highlighting the meat value chain business opportunity of carabao meat (Kardeli); development of native pig breeds; and the production and marketing of Itik PINAS, Zampen, and Caraga black native chickens. DOST-PCAARRD Livestock Research Division (LRD) Director Synan S. Baguio also presented the DOST-PCAARRD dairy R&D framework.

DOST-funded researches were awarded as best paper including Dr. Fredmoore L. Orosco’s “Philippine medicinal plants against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus,” Dr. Ester B. Flores’ “parentage verification in water buffaloes and cattle,” and Ms. Ma. Czarina R. Moreno’s “bioactive peptides in carabao’s milk.”

Awards were given to distinguished researchers, teachers, and extension workers in animal science. Dr. Rubina O. Cresencio, a recognized retired veterinarian who contributed to the achievements of the Philippine Carabao Center and the Bureau of Animal Industry of the DA was awarded 2024 PSAS Lecture Series Honoree.

Incoming PSAS President Elpidio M. Agbisit, Jr. concluded the event with a call for continued substantive discussions and collaborations to build a stronger and more secure future for the Philippine animal sector. The convention also featured the oath-taking of new regular and life members and newly-elected PSAS Governing Council.

Staff members from DOST-PCAARRD’s Livestock Research Division (LRD) also attended the convention.
