DOST-PCAARRD revives awards to recognize tech commercialization initiatives, researchers, organizations

Marking its 50th foundation anniversary, three awards: SINAG, Pantas, and Tanglaw were reintroduced to recognize technology commercialization initiatives, outstanding researchers/scientists/research administrators, and organizations, respectively that contributed to the development of the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector.

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) celebrates its 50th founding anniversary on November 10, 2022 by relaunching these three awards this year, among other event highlights.

SINAG Award

The SINAG or S&T Innovations in Agri-Aqua Award, originally recognized R&D personnel who have developed commercial technologies as well as champions in the promotion of existing technologies being supported by DOST-PCAARRD. This award will be given every two years. The revival of SINAG Awards will recognize individuals, groups, or organizations who are successful in commercializing AANR technologies through spin-off companies, licensing, and registration for intellectual property rights.

SINAG award will have three categories: Innovator, Facilitator/Enabler, and Adopter. The Innovator aims to award the owner/inventor of the technology, whereas the facilitator or enabler will be given to technology incubators, IPBTMOs. Lastly, the Adopter award shall be given to successful companies who have secured technology’s license, market availability of technology by-products, and stable operation.

Pantas and Tanglaw Award

The Council will also reintroduce its two awards, namely Pantas and Tanglaw. In the past years, Pantas award had been given to outstanding scientists/researchers and research administrators who have greatly contributed to the advancement of the AANR development in the country. It is given every two years.

The Pantas award was derived from a Filipino word ‘pantas’ equivalent to sage, wise man, and scholarly, thus the award is given to individuals who have outstanding research and innovative research ideas and knowledge in their respective field of study.

On the other hand, the Tanglaw award recognizes local institutions, agencies, and organizations who have significantly contributed as well to the development of the AANR sector in the country.

From the name of the award, Tanglaw is a Filipino term used to reference light that illuminates dark paths. The awardees, therefore are being recognized for guiding their respective research institutions in achieving their goals and objectives in fostering the AANR sector.
