DOST-PCAARRD Mindanao consortia promote S&T projects at DATE 2023

Selected S&T project outputs of the Mindanao-based regional R&D consortia of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) were exhibited at the recently concluded 2023 Davao Agri Trade Expo (DATE) held at the SMX Convention Center, Lanang, Davao City.

DATE, touted as the biggest and longest-running agri-business expo in Southern Philippines, has been organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the past 25 years.

The Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC) led and coordinated the participation of the Mindanao consortia comprised of the Caraga Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (CCAARRD), Northern Mindanao Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NOMCAARRD), SOCCKSARGEN Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (SOXAARDEC), and Western Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (WESMAARRDEC).

The base agencies of the different consortia and their consortium member institutions (CMIs) were in tow in promoting their S&T projects.

The University of Southeastern Philippines, SMAARRDEC’s base agency, displayed the coconut climber, Pisolar, and Biotrichof. The consortium’s CMI, the Davao Del Sur State College, showcased its work on liquid trichoderma.

CCAARRD’s base agency, the Caraga State University, exhibited its projects on black native chicken and black soybean products.

Screening indigenous plant as biopesticide (SIPBIO) and natural fungicide from T. piperata were featured by the Central Mindanao University, NOMCAARRD’s base agency. On the other hand, the Mindanao State University-Naawan Campus spotlighted their production of spirulina biomass.

SOXAARRDEC featured their digital PCR banana probe kits, saluyot- and okra-based Nateura face cream and body lotion, and Halal chevon products.

Western Mindanao State University, WESMAARRDEC’s base agency, exhibited its ZamPen native chicken projects.

Also included in the DOST-PCAARRD Mindanao Consortia booth was the Council’s Itik Pinas Program.

Moreover, DOST-PCAARRD officials were invited in the plenary sessions. Dr. Ernesto O. Brown, Socio-Economics Research Division (SERD) Director, representing the Council’s Executive Director Reynaldo V. Ebora, discussed the Council’s support to R&D while Livestock Research Division Director Synan S. Baguio elaborated on ItikPINAS as an enterprise.
