DOST-PCAARRD joins NSTW 2018

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) once more joins the yearly Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-led celebration of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on July 17- 21 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Adopting the theme "Science for the People: Innovation for Collective Prosperity," this year’s exhibit presents an interaction of science technology and innovation (STI) for community progress in four clusters: Science and Technology Innovations (STI) at Home, STI in School, STI in the Workplace, and STI in the Marketplace.

DOST-PCAARRD showcases its STI concerns in the Home and Workplace clusters together with other DOST agencies and Regional Offices.

For the Home Cluster, DOST-PCAARRD showcases Queen Pineapple, charcoal briquette, marinade, sweetpotato products, duhat and bignay microencapsulated anthocyanin extracts, hydroponics, and spray Chrysanthemum production system.

Divided into five sections (farm mechanization, crops, livestock, aquatic, and forestry), the Workplace cluster, contains DOST-PCAARRD’s impeller-type compact rice mill, green coffee sorter, coffee depulper, somatic embryogenesis of Queen Pineapple, dwarf saba strain, Nutrio biofertilizer for eggplant and sugarcane, ACTICON biopesticide for Cavendish banana, carrageenan growth enhancer for mungbean, native animals (native pig, native chicken, and Itik Pinas), Surface Toughness Analyser for Rubber (STAR), root trainer technology in producing budded rubber seedlings, LAMP kit for early mortality syndrome (EMS) of shrimp, web-based suitability maps for mussels, mechanical seaweed harvester, and tie-line straw inserter, among other technologies.

PCAARRD is also hosting a technology fora, which features five topics: Itik Pinas Kayumanggi and Food Safety Regime on the 18th at the World Trade Center’s Function Room 2, and Biological-based Approaches for Cacao Pest Management, Algal Blooms and Red Tide, LAMP kit for shrimp early mortality syndrome, SARAI SEAMS and SPid for Smart Agricuture, Greenhouse-type solar dryer for coffee beans, and Carrageenan Technology on Mungbean Production on the 19th in the same venue.

Commenced in July 1993, the NSTW recognizes the contribution of science and technology (S&T) to the country's development. It aims to inspire the participation and support of public and private institutions for the sustainable development of S&T in the country.

The NSTW puts a premium on the capability of local science and technology experts and at the same time inspires the youth and other sectors on the value of Filipino ingenuity and resourcefulness in producing local technologies that work.
