Recommended technologies and practices on mangrove crab hatchery and nursery will soon be compiled in a publication.
The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) and 12 experts on mangrove crab team up to draft the PCAARRD publication, The Philippines Recommends on Mangrove Crab.
The Philippines Recommends (PR) is a series of PCAARRD publications on important commodities that tackle the results of R&D activities conducted by the government and private research institutions.
To kick off this initiative, the PCAARRD team, headed by Dr. Dalisay DG. Fernandez, Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD) Director and Dr. Adelaida T. Calpe, Industry Strategic S&T Program (ISP) Manager for Mangrove Crab met with the technical committee for the PR recently at Highway 21 Hotel, Iloilo City. Dr. Emilia T. Quinitio from the Integrated Services for the Development of Aquaculture and Fisheries (ISDA) Inc. serves as chair of the technical committee.
Members of the committee include Mr. Wilfredo G. Yap from SANTEH Aquaculture S&T Foundation Inc.; Dr. Ma. Rowena R. Eguia, Dr. Fe Dolores Estepa, Dr. Edgar Amar, Dr. Eleonor Tendencia, and Dr. Veronica Alava from Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center – Aquaculture Department; Dr. Ma. Carmen Lagman of De La Salle University; Dr. Rachel Gotanco of the University of the Philippines Diliman Marine Science Institute (UPD-MSI); Dr. Relicardo Coloso of the University of San Agustin; Dr. Fe Porciuncula from Central Luzon State University; Ms. Consuelo Baltazar of BFAR Central Office; Dr. Jose Peralta and Ms. Jhoana Alcalde from UP Visayas and UP Los Baños, respectively.
Discussed during the activity were the terms of reference, outline of the manuscript, individual assignments, and timeline of publication. The Philippines Recommends for Mangrove Crab will be a compilation of technologies from the production of mangrove crab to marketing. It will also serve as a standard reference material and guide to extension workers, technicians, and farmers
