DOST Secretary Engr. Fortunato T. Dela Peña (left photo) visits the SIPAG ni Juan exhibits at the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) Innovation and Technology Center (DPITC). DOST-PCAARRD Acting Executive Director Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora and DOST-PCAARRD Marine Resources Research Division Director Dr. Mari-Ann M. Acedera explain the technologies under the National Abalone R&D program. Abalone, a fishery resource, has high commercial values worldwide as its meat is an important source of food, while its shell is used for ornaments and jewelries.
Among the accomplishments of the program is the technology on broodstock development and management, which promotes increased survival rate of veliger larvae and improved hatchery efficiency for sorting and harvesting of abalone juveniles. DOST Undersecretary for Science and Technology (S&T) Services Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara (right photo) views the booth of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 4 at the Wonderama exhibits of the 2016 SyenSaya. Wonderama and SIPAG ni Juan exhibits are part of the 2016 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration held from July 25 to 29, 2016. The Los Baños Science Community cluster is sponsored by the Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. (LBSCFI), Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), DOST IV, and DOST-PCAARRD.
