AIT delegation visits DOST-PCAARRD to enhance collaboration in education and research

A delegation from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) visited the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) to bolster educational and research collaborations, on February 19, 2024. The meeting was attended by key officials and representatives from both institutions to strengthen existing ties, explore new avenues of cooperation, and enhance AIT’s visibility within the Philippines.

Led by the Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development Professor P. Abdul Salam and the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology/Global Water Sanitation Center Professor Sangam Shrestha, the AIT delegation, accompanied by Ms. Amalia Canulas, Assistant to the Dean, and Mr. Christopher Van Deita aimed to foster greater academic exchange between the two institutions.

The program commenced with a warm welcome message from DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director Reynaldo V. Ebora, setting the stage for a productive session. Policy Coordination and Monitoring Division Director Lilian G. Bondoc introduced the officials and participants from DOST-PCAARRD, creating an environment conducive to meaningful exchanges and collaboration. Mr. Christopher Van Deita outlined the purpose of the visit, which emphasizes the mutual goals of enhancing collaboration and fostering academic exchange between the Philippine and AIT institutions.

Throughout the meeting, both parties engaged in discussions exploring potential areas of collaboration. Deputy Executive Director for ARMSS Melvin B. Carlos shared DOST-PCAARRD's ongoing initiatives and programs, laying the groundwork for discussions on potential areas of collaboration. PCAARRD-IDD Director Fezoil Luz C. Decena discussed the Council’s programs on human resource development opportunities for partnership and capacity-building.

Professors Abdul Salam and Sangam Shrestha showcased the AIT's esteemed reputation, academic offerings, and dedication to excellence in education and research. These presentations spurred discussions on potential collaboration avenues including joint degree programs and research projects to address key societal challenges and advance knowledge.

As discussions progressed, delegates explored innovative approaches to collaboration including sandwich scholarship programs and researcher exchanges between the institutions. Both parties emphasized the importance of identifying mutual priority areas and implementing agencies on a shared commitment to expediting collaborative efforts for maximum impact.

The meeting culminated in a commitment between DOST-PCAARRD and AIT to leverage the 2023–2026 Work Plan of Cooperation signed on September 26, 2023. This agreement would serve as an implementing framework under the DOST-PCAARRD Memorandum of Understanding inked on September 28, 2020. It solidifies the foundation for future collaboration and innovation in research and education.

As the meeting drew to a close, there was a sense of optimism and enthusiasm for the future of collaboration between AIT and DOST-PCAARRD. The exchange of ideas, insights, and aspirations laid a solid foundation for future cooperation, reflecting the shared vision of both institutions to leverage their collective expertise and resources for the greater good.

The courtesy visit and exploratory meeting between the AIT delegation and DOST-PCAARRD marked a significant step towards strengthening educational and research collaboration between the Philippines and the wider global community.
